Summary:
Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. The much-covered "Lay All Your Love on Me" is practically epic. --Steve Gdula

The Winner Takes It All
Customer Rating: Score = 5Score = 5Score = 5Score = 5Score = 5
Happy birthday!

Remember the time you forgot mine?

Fantasy masters, at the time ABBA appeared little more than a heteronormative Bee Gees or Wings with better champagne bubbles. Since Madonna, though, everyone knows "Lay All Your Love On Me" et al presaged modern times. All evolution, bi-ped onwards, ain't been about the use of tools or weapons; it's been supernaturally finetuned for the dance floor. Back in the late 80's, when I was but a crossdressing infant, it was those boppy ditties ("Ring Ring") and sad anthems ("One Of Us") that got me off, but, now, I hear the thumper numbers as the dopest. "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie" is real life test! Toppermost is the perverse meshing of 1880 musichall with 1978 disco on "Money, Money, Money" complete with female self-empowerment on the final verse. I always intuited the right music was more essential than sugared makeup and ABBA, my dear, is superswoon, the ultrafemmest.

Do no evil.

After seeing "Mamma Mia", the musical, in Las Vegas, I was hot to buy a CD of the music. This album did not disappoint. If you like ABBA, you'll love this CD. The price is right at Amazon.

Bubble gum, but with flavor

In the 60's and 70's, music afficionados would denigrate top 40 radio fare by calling it "bubble gum music", i.e. for the masses. Well, ABBA was a conglomeration of the best of Euro sound into the top act ever on that continent(during their short existence) for such music for the masses. They had a harmony that was haunting, and people either recoiled from the sound or gravitated to it. I found it electrifying and if you did too, then this album is for you. It has all of their greatest hits(that crossed the Atlantic to our shores) and is well worth the money.

ABBA Gold

Sweden's greatest pop group all but disappeared in the 1980's. Lyricist Bjorn Ulvaeus said he thought it was over, that ABBA's music would never be heard again. Then came the 1990s and a massive worldwide revival. ABBA Gold spearheaded the revival, topping the album charts in may countries. Books and TV shows about ABBA followed. Gold contains the very best of ABBA. Dancing Queen is a song recognizable all over the world. It even went to number one in the United States. Other ABBA classics on this CD are Take A Chance On Me, Knowing Me Knowing You and The Winner Takes it All. ABBA Gold deserves to be in everyone's collection. A masterpiece!
