Summary:
It's been a long time in coming, but with So Called Chaos Alanis Morisette has finally produced a worthy follow up to her globe-conquering debut. Calmer and more focused, the songs exude a new, mature woman, firmly in control of her life. "I'm not threatened by every pair of legs you watch go by," she sings with Zen-like serenity on "Doth I Protest Too Much" (as if she'd have said that on Jagged Little Pill). Time mellows--leave the angst to Avril Lavigne.

Tracks:
Eight Easy Steps
Out Is Through
Excuses
Doth I Protest Too Much

WHILE I LOVE ALANIS, THIS WAS NOT MY FAVORITE ALBUM.

ITS BEEN REMIXED AND IS AMAZING

Not quite an Alanis fan, but...

I like her music mainly because a friend from high school lent me one of her CDs. It's definitely a bit different from other pop/alt music.

Following 2002's self-produced and underrated Under Rug Swept, Morissette returns in 2004 with So-Called Chaos. With this release, Morissette has done a complete makeover of her look with a serious haircut and sporting a look of casual glamour like she's aspiring to take Hollywood by strom but isn't 100% sure. Maybe the new look and image might have worked if Morissette's makeover in sound was good enough to go with it-but it's not. This CD starts out good with the opening cut "Eight Easy Steps," a fast-paced rockin' tune with Alanis at the wheel of leadership but also ready to bust her own chops at the same moment. "Out is Through" follows and also stands out, but then So-Called Chaos begins to turn problematic by not having an edge. And Morissette should never have brought John Shanks or Tim Thorney(or both)on board for assistance because she was left with bland arrangements behind many of the tracks. "Doth I Protest Too Much" is without a doubt the worst song Alanis has ever recorded. The title song attempts for a gritty and gutsy feel but even that attempt becomes overshadowed by Morissette's lyrics(yes, not her best work)when she refers to heartburn, headaches, and breached contracts as primary results of a chaotic lifestyle. The tracks continue with "All of Me," and "This Grudge," both rather dull, while the closing track "Everything" was a weak choice for the first single. Morissette has always been a progressive artist, but So-Called Chaos doesn't measure up to any of its predecessors, and may leave many fans longing to see the girl with the jagged heart still spinning with her free-flowing locks firmly in place.

Grows on You

I'm a huge fan of Alanis Morissette and have all her CD's (less her dance albums before "Jagged Little Pill" and B-sides). "So-Called Chaos" took a while to grow on me - two years to be exact. Not an insult (like I said, I'm a huge fan of Alanis), but it took this long for me to discover the gems here.

"Eight Easy Steps", "Excuses", "So-Called Chaos" and "Not All Me" are all remarkable songs that only Alanis could create.

A really unique artist who will hopefully blow the world away again with a long overdue "comeback" (I hate to use this word, that the music industry seems to stick on artists who never really "go away") album.

Alanis Morissette's So-Called Chaos is a glorious and fun record. I love all her albums, Under Rug Swept is her best, but for my favorite, it is defintely this album. Only ten songs here, but they are big, mighty songs with intelligent lyrics and rock out music. Eight Easy Steps is pure genius:"How to stay stuck in blue by blaming them for everything..." Out is Through is very mellow and simple: "We could just walkaway and hide our heads in the sand..." Excuses is the song i feel the most closest to:"These excuses, how they have served me so well, they've kept me safe, they've kept me stuck..." My fave song is Doth I protest too much:"I'm not enraged, not insecure as such..." Bees of my Knees is catchy and cute:"You make the bees of my knees weak, tremble and buckle." The title track has the best guitar music ever! "I wanna be naked runnning through the streets, i wanna invite this so-called chaos..." Not all Me is very grown-up Alanis:"It's not all me, it's not all my fault..." This Grudge is classic Alanis:"I wanna be big and let go..." Spineless is the best song on the record "I know you'd leave if I rocked the boat." Everything is accepting yourself and the person who loves you uncondtionally:"You see everything, you see all my light and you love my dark." This album is so damn good! Don't waste to purchase this album, you won't be disappointed.
