For $12.97, you get regular stereo sound plus 5.1 DVD Music! Documentary is no Ken Burn's Jazz but it is nice bonus. Enjoy the sweet music.

KIND OF HAPPY WITH KIND OF BLUE

Kind of Blue is arguably the best jazz album of all time. Some might say that it is the greatest album of all time, period, though I would not go quite that far. Nevertheless, I will prize this release as my very first Dualdisc DVD.

The sound quality in this format is quite superb. Through my DVD player, I played the CD (Side 1) version of Kind of Blue and compared it with the Dualdisc 5.1 (Side 2) version. It turns out that they are both enjoyable; however, the 5.1 does add that nice dimension to Davis' cool, trumpet-blowing jazz.

If you ever take the time to listen, you will be delighted by the advanced resolution in the sound quality and how the instrumentations are simultaneously separated and reverberated throughout the six channels. In terms of awesome sound quality, Kind of Blue never sounded so good. Again, if you prefer the 5.1 mix, you can listen to side 2, or if you are a self-proclaimed purist who prefers not having audio tampered in the least bit, then stay on Side 1.

All in all, think of it as 2 for the price of 1. Regardless of the format, this Miles Davis classic is a must have!

This SACD will not play in any of my DVD or CD devices. Not the car, not the PC DVD Players. It will not play on the Sony CD & DVD players.

THIS Dual DIsc sucks

This is a dual disc with a nearly standard resolution mix (16bit@48KHz) deliberately published by Sony (the creator with Philips of the SACD!) to infringe the Dual Disc reputation. Dual Disc itself is not good or bad: can have up to 24bit@192KHz in stereo mode and 24bit@96KHz in multichannel mode. The system is garbage in-garbage out: if you put garbage *in* (16 bit resolution) you get garbage *out* (16 bit resolution).
If you wish to enjoy Dual Disc / DVD-A go elsewhere: PCM is superior to DSD (but you'll hardly listen the difference if the recording is well done, though).
Miles Davis music is outstanding, of course - this is out of question!

Format is Fine - What's all the complaining about?

I traded my old AAD copy of Kind of Blue to get this. I don't know what all the complaints are about. It plays just fine on my MAC and in my DVD player. No complaints with it in any CD player I've popped it into. I don't know about the software download alledged by one reviewer. I've heard of this sort of thing, I don't think I've played this on my Windows machine other than the one at work and again, no problems. If it had tried to install a program, my machine at work would have caught that due to strict admin controls (I'm a software developer by trade). I was able to rip the disc and play it all the time when I'm at work, so the complaint below that you can't rip this edition is simply not true.

I found the extras on the DVD side enjoyable, especially seeing Jimmy Cobb, the sole surviving member of the ensemble that created this music. It was also fun hearing Miles giving direction on the session tapes and the interviews with Bill Evans (radio) were great.

I really think that those who are rating this less than 5 stars must be audiophiles of the highest order. I love the Dual Disc format. As far as not being SACD as one reviewer claimed, I turned the packaging over inside and out and could find no claim as to this being SACD. If you want SACD quality, you have to buy it. As far as Sony pulling the plug on SACD, I hardly think a review of Kind of Blue is the place to air such complaints and then misinform those reading the review that this release is something that was falsely advertised.

If you want to see the interviews, buy the dual disc. If you don't care about the interviews, by the 24 bit remaster. it's that simple people.
