Summary:
History's already shown that the self-proclaimed master of "bad taste" has always had impeccably good taste, even at his most extreme. A large part of the reason that his aesthetic has had a real and unabated influence since the early 1970s is that there's nothing forced or ironic about his approach to film-making, including the soundtracks to his movies, which the director terms "little-known, weird vintage music." Waters says that the selections on A Date are "all romantic seduction music I would play if I had you over." Naturally, it's an off-kilter patchwork selection; most folks would not try to seduce someone with either an Ike & Tina Turner number or "Sometimes I Wish I Had a Gun," sung by Waters habitué Mink Stole. The collection is fun and veers from mellow crooners and hopped-up rhythm and blues to forgotten rocker hits from the '50s ("Tonight You Belong to Me" by Patience and Prudence) and '70s ("Jet Boy Jet Girl" by Elton Motello). If the collection sells well, the director promises to bring you Breaking Up with John Waters, as if you needed another reason to buy this one. --Mike McGonigal

Heard Waters talking to Terry Gross a few years ago when this first came out and it stuck in my head. Glad it did because this is one of the best compilation albums ever. Everything from the scarily sincere to the very, very strange. My favorite is probably "You Belong to Me," which could be innocent but somehow I doubt it. I love it all and, seeing as I love his Christmas album, too, I hope he does more of these!

The other reviewers have said it all, and I'll add my praise - exceeded my high expectations. I don't know where he found some of the tracks. I remember hearing 'Jet Boy Jet Girl (he gives me head)' on the radio in the 80s, and hadn't been able to find it since - until now!

Not for children or prudes. All you cool people - enjoy! John: do some more compilations! How about a DVD of weird movie scenes?

Fabulous!

This isn't the first time John Waters has compiled a list of his favorite tracks to a theme (See, John Waters Christmas...). The man has a knack for resurfacing some of the oddest and classic tunes of all time. This album is themed around a Macabre-Valentines Day-ish Date with John....I won't go into specific tracks because you can see them here... but some of the songs on this album are virtually impossible to find anywhere else. This is a must-have disc for the fan of Waters or otherwise!

You're hopelessly seduced from the opening track "Tonight You Belong To Me" (Patience and Prudence) - "the first record I ever shoplifted". From there on it's just a matter of when John will pop the question. But he's not easy - and he makes sure the mood is set just right.

All these tracks are in pristine condition and the compilation is arranged and produced to perfection. Anyone who has tried their hand at mix tapes will swoon at John's informed skill and remarkable taste.

I bought the CD just for "Jet Boy Jet Girl", "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Johnny Are You Queer?" - but every other song here is a true gem. I am exuberantly happy with this purchase.

The music is enhanced by the liner notes in which John guides us through his planned evening of romantic bliss - and respects us enough to leave us with a beautiful song for the morning after ("Bewildered").

For all of us who will never be fortunate enough to date John Waters in person, this is the next best thing.
