Summary:
One shouldn't have too much difficulty imagining a two-disc Van Halen compilation entitled The Best of Both Worlds. The first disc will showcase the David Lee Roth-fronted version of the band that reenergized hard rock with its titanic 1978 debut and peaked commercially with 1984's, uh, 1984. Disc two will take up where David Lee was left off--from 1986 on, when Sammy Hagar (and, briefly, Hagar-sound-alike Gary Cherone) took over the mike. Well, unfortunately, that's not the anthology assembled this time out. Rather than sequence the selections chronologically and, in the process, display the band's evolution (or devolution, depending on where one stands in the great Roth/Hagar debate), the band has opted for a more eccentric sequencing strategy. After the opener "Eruption" confirms the sass and chops of the young VH, three fairly uninspired new tracks featuring a back-in-the-fold (for now?) Hagar interrupt the flow. Unfortunately, the flow never really recovers, as Roth and Hagar tracks leapfrog one another through the next 29 selections. Three live Hagar takes on songs from the Roth era finish things off in confusing fashion. Obviously, there's plenty of powerful music here, but do fans really need a lesson in what happens when worlds collide? And didn't David Lee earn at least one photo in the package? --Steven Stolder

Perfect for the casual fan

I've read alot of complaining about the sequence of the songs and I see the point but it has it's pros as well. You get a better comparaison of Roth and Hagar this way. To be honest if they had broken them up in to Disc one Roth and Disc two Hagar I would have not played the Hagar stuff much at all.
This way I was sort of forced to listen and now have a genuine appreciation for the man as a singer.
I've always prefered David Lee Roth but I can at least see both eras respetfully now where as I use to just ignore most Hagar songs on the radio.
This album has made be want to buy more of both eras of Van Halen now.

Really The Best Of Both Worlds

This is a great collection of songs to those unfamiliar with Van halen and even to those who have all of their albums. the remaster sound is wonderful (with the exception of (oh) pretty woman. the version on Diver Down (remastered) is a lot clearer). I would recommend this collection to all van halen fans new and old. I am, however, disappointed that Van Halen III with Gary Charone is not represented here as that was a good and very underrated album. The glitch on track 6 of disc 1 is simply they forgot to fade it out at the end. Otherwise a very good album altogether.

The record companies think we are stupid!

No Van Halen fan put this CD together. Yes, better organization of the songs would have helped it. Simply placing the selected songs in sequence would have been prefered, but the some of the selections suck too. There are plenty of hits on here, but there are some dogs as well (compared to other other songs they could have chosen).

I feel like Eddie had an obligation to the record company and did not fullfill it, so they delegated it to some intern who knew nothing about Van Halen to make a greatest hits. I could be totally wrong, but this is how the haphazard way in which the CD was put together makes me feel.

Van Halen is much too important (as a part of Rock history) to be treated this flipantly. Get this CD if you want to save on the download fees (it has approx 36 songs for $15). Delete the songs you don't want and resequence the rest. Don't expect this to be a great intro or overview to the band as you will walk away confused about the influence this band had on the 80's and 90's in American Rock.

It's missing several good songs!!!!!!!!!

This compilation blows Vol. 1 out of the water when it comes to how many songs you get, but it's missing several good songs from the early David Lee Roth era. Most notable missing tracks such as "Bottoms Up!", "You're No Good", "Feel Your Love Tonight", "Somebody Get Me A Doctor", "Light Up The Sky" and a few others.

Buy this compilation and grab Van Halen II and you should be set for everything good they did.

I Forgot How Many Hits These Guys Had

I haven't listened to Van Halen in quite some time until I bought this cd. As of this date you can get this cd at $9.99 which is a steal. I've seen this priced as high as $20.00 on other sites and it stores. Both sides are about 120 minutes each. I actually like the random order of the songs. The song selection goes from Sammy to Dave and back and forth again. There are only a few instances where Sammy sings a few songs in a row and Dave sings a couple songs in a row. I liked the the three newer songs. I don't really care to hear live songs but the three on here are pretty good versions. You basically get every major hit that Van Halen had. This will probably be the definitive greatest hits of Van Halen and it is a great deal at $9.99.
